Storing and Caring for Your Wig

When it’s not crowing your head, where do you put your wig? Proper storage will help you make the most out of your wig. By storing it correctly, you can extend the life of your wig and enjoy using it for a long time.

Styrofoam Wig Head for Daily or Short-term Storage

You can use a Styrofoam wig head to store your wig for short periods of time. Placing your wig on one helps maintain the shape of the wig. Wig heads, also called wig stands, are also the best way to ‘store’ your wigs because these stands are built specifically for that purpose. Styrofoam wig heads are lightweight, functional and affordable. However, make sure to keep the wig stand clean as it can get dusty or otherwise dirty with use.

Long-term Wig Storage

If you want to put away your wig for some time, put it in plastic so that it doesn't dry out and or get dusty. Using a shaper made of tissue paper will help retain its shape. Using the original wig packaging is also a good option if you need to put away your wig for more than a few days or weeks.

How to Store Your Wig When You don’t have a Proper Stand or Storage Box

If you’re in a place where you don’t have a proper wig stand, you can wrap it in a scarf to ward off dust. You can also create a ‘storage box’ with some easy-to-find supplies. For this, you will need a plastic storage bin that you can get for a couple of dollars at a convenience store and some tissue papers. Layer the base of the bin with tissue papers. Then crumple some more tissue papers and place them inside the wig. Next, fold the wig (temples touching) in half and place it in the box. Put another layer of tissue paper on top of the wig and then close the lid.

In any case, don’t just throw your wig around when you’re not wearing it. Also, don’t leave it in direct sunlight; keep it away from windows that receive sunlight throughout the day. Your bedroom is the perfect place to store your wig since it’s safer than others where guests, kids etc. usually move in. Besides, your bedroom is also convenient as this is where you dress up for the day (or night), a ritual that definitely involves putting on or removing your wig!
